The Gnarlroot Marsh sprawls across the realm like a great, green bruise; fecund and treacherous. It is not a safe place for travellers to wander and those foolish enough to cross its shifting borders rarely re-emerge. Despite the perils, crossing the marsh remains the quickest route between the trade hubs of Drenchport to the north and Knightsbridge to the south. The turgid watercourse between these two harbours is known as the Mud Road to the brave souls who traverse it.

A demonic idol protrudes from the muck, partially submerged by the weight of ancient stone. A tribe of naked goblins cavort around its base, chanting in the guttural echo of a long forgotten tongue.

Wary bargeman clutch their staves and eye the tangled banks as their flat-bottomed vessel churns through the sluggish brown water. Covetous eyes watch their passage from the depths of the mire.

A halfling fisherman reels in his empty line, pausing to watch as a serpent ten times the length of his boat dislocates its jaw to enclose the bulk of a struggling bear. His eyes meet those of the doomed beast as it is dragged down into the black depths of the swamp. As the ripples fade, there is no trace that either the snake or its prey had ever existed. The angler grunts and recasts his line. He has seen stranger sights on the Mud Road.

And so shall you.

Novice characters begin their adventure tracking down a missing census taker who disappeared in the marsh. This adventure is designed as a mini sandbox set in/around the marsh and neighbouring environs.
