The year 1912 witnessed the Hsin-hai (Xinhai) rebellion in China. The Beiyang Army, under its leader General Yuan Shikai, overthrew the ruling Ch’ing (Qing) dynasty. The downfall of the Ch’ing brought two millennia of imperial rule to an end. Yuan declared the new Republic of China. The fledgling Republic however held a tenuous grip over the vast and disparate nation as power struggles between regional factions saw the rise of many lawless warlords.

Investigators in 1923 find themselves in a China ruled by the Beiyang government seated in Peking, but the regions remain divided between rival warlords. It will not be until 1928 that international powers recognise the legitimacy of the new Republic.

In the north, the ruthless warlord, General Wu Pei-Fu, more commonly known as the Jade Marshall, paid lip service to the government in Peking. Whereas, in the south, many warlords professed support for the outlawed Kuomintang (KMT) led by Chiang Kai-shek.

Travel through regional China is a perilous undertaking.

Going to give this a slight rethink just so it makes more sense as to why he is at the talk.

Still Italian, still clergy but perhaps a Jesuit missionary instead, a scholar who is researching the history of the early Jesuit missions to China.

Random thought right now is some sort of Thief specialising in antiquities. Got himself invited to the event to scope the University out for something like some rare books or somethimg?

Plenty of scope for a thief-smuggler-underhanded dealer in 1920s China. Corruption abounds, and China's ancient history and its antiquities were being unearthed (and plundered) in this period just the same as the excavations in Egypt and the middle-east etc.

Jemadar (Lt) Arsala Khan - Ex British Army

Arsala Khan at aged 16 fought as part of the British army against the Boxer Rebeliion in 1900, after this he remained with the army and rose through the ranks. His interest in the orient was infectious, and vowed to return there on his retirement. Arsala, of the 57th Wilde's Rifles led the troops of the first Indian company to enter the British trenches on the western front, in Belgium on the night of 22 October 1914 at age 31. Arsala Khan went on to serve until 1918, in France, Egypt, German East Africa and India. Then, in the summer of 1919, he represented his regiment in London at the official Indian victory parade, after this, he mustered out and returned to China.
